Like pre, prex preserves whitespace. Unlike it, prex only translates "unkind characters" everything else is passed through unchanged (e.g. phrases are not translated).
Notice *bold* does not create bold text. And normally <em>these tags</em> would not be touched by the translator since they are valid XHTML.
